There has been a recent study claiming that Moms don't work as hard as they think they do. Dr. Robins, with the University of Maryland, feels that Moms have about 30 hours of leisure time per week. Do you feel this is true about you? He actually breaks things down to point out that you aren't as busy as you think, but we need to feel that we are so busy and in such demand. I was a little outraged when I heard this, but I really feel after reading the informaiton and looking at how my life works, it is all a matter of DEFINITION.....
I can see where some of the time is but I wouldn't catorigize it as LEISURE time.
His definitions of Leisure Time is:
Organizational: Volunteering, Clubs, Church
Entertainment/Social: Events, Movies, Parties
Recreational: Sports, Hobbies, Travel
Communication: Media, Converstational, Reading
Another way to look at it is that what he is definining as LEISURE Time are activities we have chosen to engage in. So for instance checking your email, voicemail, looking on the internet for clothes, books, reading blogs, newspapers, etc is all LEISURE Time.
So what do you think?
Salary.com reports that a stay at home Mom works an average of 94.4 hours a week, when you turn that into a salary based of the jobs they perform and what others are paid who do those jobs and figure in overtime, her salary would be $ 117,000.00 per year. I really think I am WORTH that.
If this is LEISURE Time then it is interruped LEISURE Time and not very productive, we are always on call. We may have LEISURE Time, but it's not the same quality of time.
So I challenge you to look at your day and find time that you aren't directly involved or directly interacting. I don't think it is LEISURE Time, but I do think it is non-involved time.
Are we really as busy as we think???
Please share what you think.
And by the way writing this blog has been a use of my LEISURE Time....
